DEER HUNTING SEASONS. All portions of the OHT are open during the hunting seasons, and hunters may be using the trail. They also just happen to hike the trail for fun like we do during non-hunting seasons, and some maintain the trail as well—we are glad to have them using the trail. While it is not required of hikers, it is advised that during the main gun deer seasons you may want to wear some type of blaze-orange clothing. Most all hiking trails in the state are open to hunting, except those in obvious urban areas and most of the state parks (Hobbs State Park is an exception and IS open to hunting during deer season but is NOT open to hiking). The bottom line is that there is no reason not to hike during deer season (except at Hobbs where hiking is prohibited), however you should be aware that there will be increased activity in the woods and you may hear gunfire. Just be alert and friendly and have a great hike!
