MAY - JUNE 2005 NEWSLETTER, #216
(more items will be added within the next week)

Neither OHTA nor our volunteer leaders are responsible in any way for the safety of participants.
HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Visit the archives section for previous newseltters.

SAVE A TREE, SAVE US MONEY, GET INSTANT INFORMATION—READ THE NEWSLETTER ONLINE. With this new web page format, it will be even easier and faster for us to post new information online. Hikes and work trips will be added/updated as soon as we get the info—no need to wait until the next newsletter! Plus there will be color photos, direct links to web pages, and some extra stuff that will not be in the normal newsletter. In an effort to cut down our mailing and printing costs (and save trees and oil), we are asking everyone to read the newsletter online here instead of receiving a hard copy mailed to them. You can always print out a copy if needed. If you would like to help out, and get your info as much as 2-3 weeks faster, send us an e-mail and tell us to remove you from the hard copy mail list (NOTE: you will not be notified when the newsletter is ready - you simply log on whenever you like.) Then simply go online whenever you like to read the latest news, which will be updated throughout the month. If we do not hear from you, we will continue to mail a hard copy to you as always. IF YOU ARE READING THIS NEWSLETTER NOW ONLINE, PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO SO, and let us know to stop your hard copy from being mailed to you. Thanks!

E-MAIL LIST. If you would like to be reminded via e-mail of meetings and outings, or any other OHTA business (no SPAM), send a note to our Membership Chairman, Dean LaGrone, and you will be included on the e-mail list.

May & June 2005 EVENTS

We are very excited to announce that one lucky OHTA outings leader is going to win a brand new Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS receiver that is being donated by the Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville—a $350 value! Each time a leader has signed up to lead an outing—beginning last September and going through the end of this June—their name has been entered into this grand prize drawing that will be held at the June OHTA general meeting. Folks who have led more than one hike get their name in as many times as they have led outings—lead two hikes, two chances to win; three hikes, three chances, etc. Be sure to attend the June meeting and see who is the lucky—and very deserving—winner. It might be you! A very special thanks to the Pack Rat Outdoor Center for making this possible—www.PackRat.biz.
Why shop anywhere else?

All overnight trips are limited to a total of ten hikers and you must register with the hike leader in advance. NEW GUIDEBOOK AVAILABLE

Thru Hiker's Guide to America
25 Incredible Trails You Can Hike in One to Eight Weeks

Dreaming of taking a long hike someplace new? Don’t know where to start? Start with the Thru Hiker’s Guide to America: 25 incredible trails you can hike in one to eight weeks. This is a perfect book designed to give you many ideas and plenty of dreams of hitting the trail for an extended stay. The trails range from 95 to 1,300 miles long and are scattered all over the United States. And yes, the Ozark Highlands Trail and the Ouachita Trail are included. While it is not intended to be used as a trail map or navigational tool, this book gives you plenty of information to help you get started planning your adventure. With the opening section, Reasons to Go or Reasons Not to Go, a quick glance is all it takes to determine which trail might be the one for you. A map of the state with the general area of the trail will give you some idea of location, but should not be used to hike by. Weather, terrain, water, wildlife and points of interest are all described with a sense of humor. Tips in the Don’t Leave Home Without It section are all given by the writer based on personal experience, and we can all learn a lot from others misfortunes. Information is also given on where to obtain detail maps and directions so that you may plan in depth. So if you are dreaming of making a longer adventure in the woods, Thru Hiker’s Guide to America just may be the place to start. Published by McGraw-Hill, Author Eric Schlimmer.
